They seek out your opinions, encourage you to take the lead, and soon, you are swept up in a role of significance. The people recognize and applaud you because you are a leader. This is the historic Dennis Chavez New Mexico LDZ!

At NHI, we believe that true leadership goes beyond just having a title. It involves having the drive to bring out the best in others and the ability to inspire innovation. By focusing on celebrating the success of others rather than just personal recognition, you can fully embrace and unlock the true power of leadership.

During an 8-day residential program, students are taught to adopt an asset-based mindset and utilize NHI's community equity-based approach to build a strong community, establish support groups, and create plans to maximize their strengths and abilities. ABOUT THE NATIONAL HISPANIC INSTITUTE

OUR FOUNDERS
In 1979, the National Hispanic Institute was established by Ernesto Nieto and Gloria de León with the objective of constructing a significant and sustained presence in the Latino community. Their vision was to empower the next generation of leaders by providing young Latinos with opportunities to envision and realize their value beyond conventional notions of success, such as college degrees and career goals. Through thoughtfully structured experiences, students are encouraged to analyze their beliefs, behaviors, and outlooks, in order to identify their inherent strengths and areas where they can grow. Additionally, students are taught to appreciate the importance of preserving and embracing their cultural and spiritual identities. This approach, based on the recognition and leveraging of assets, is the bedrock of NHI's equity-building strategy for cultivating community leaders. For more than 40 years, NHI has been unrelentingly committed to serving the community through its leadership initiatives. Our organization remains steadfast in our adherence to this mission and will always prioritize it as our guiding principle.

Founded in 1889 as New Mexico’s flagship institution, The University of New Mexico now occupies nearly 800 acres near old Route 66 in the heart of Albuquerque, a metropolitan area of more than 900,000 people. From the magnificent mesas to the west, past the banks of the historic Rio Grande to the Sandia Mountains to the east, Albuquerque is a blend of culture and cuisine, styles and stories, people, pursuits and panoramas.

Offering a distinctive campus environment with a Pueblo Revival architectural theme, the campus buildings echo nearby Pueblo Indian villages. The nationally recognized campus arboretum and the popular duck pond offer an outstanding botanical experience in the midst of one of New Mexico's great public open spaces.
